The incident drew criticism across social media, but Cormier offered a sympathetic take on his YouTube channel, attributing the breach to brotherly emotion rather than malice.

Cormier Defends Nurmagomedov Brothers After Shanghai Finish

Cormier said Usman did not actually attack Yadong and was simply trying to reach his fallen sibling. "He did not elbow him, let's stop making conspiracy theories out there," the former UFC champion and current color commentator said. He added that while cage invasions are prohibited, anyone would understand rushing to help a blood brother in that moment, comparing it to the post-fight brawl at UFC 229 between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor.

Till reportedly mocked Cormier as a "potato head" for the extended defense of the Nurmagomedov camp, per MMA Mania. The former welterweight title challenger, now fighting bare-knuckle for BKFC, took particular issue with Cormier praising Umar for attempting to live up to the family name despite the knockout loss. Cormier had argued that carrying the Nurmagomedov legacy creates unique pressure, noting Umar remains 20-2 and should work his way back into title contention quickly.

Usman Nurmagomedov is expected to sign with UFC later this year. Umar dropped to No. 5 in the official bantamweight rankings following the finish.
