Teofimo Lopez Vs. Shakur Stevenson – How Does It Play Out?
Following their verbal exchanges on social media, Teofimo Lopez has confirmed that a fight with Shakur Stevenson could be finalized soon.
Reports indicate that the bout is being targeted for Saudi Arabia, as it could air on Netflix. Lopez and Shakur exchanged words at the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford post-presser. Crawford asked Lopez if he would sign the contract to fight Shakur, putting the pressure on Teo to make the fight.
Lopez beat Arnold Barboza Jr. in May to retain his WBO junior welterweight title, while Stevenson, the WBC lightweight champion, also had a win in May, defending his title against William Zepeda. The fight would require Shakur to move up to 140, as we look at how the fight could play out.
"Me and Shakur are prepped. We really want to give the fans a good showing. Hopefully, Riyadh Season comes in and makes this happen. We both want to fight. We talked about it on X. Now, it’s the business side of the people to settle it and finish it. It’s marketing to establish it," Lopez said
The Approach
Stevenson would look to use his footwork, feints, and head movement to frustrate Lopez. Stevenson’s goal would not be to knock out Lopez, but to land clean counter-punches and win round after round. His previous performances, such as his win over Jamel Herring, demonstrated his ability to completely neutralize a top fighter by controlling the distance and tempo of the fight. The main question for Stevenson will be whether his punches will carry enough power at 140 pounds.
Lopez’s tactical approach would be focused on landing his right hand. Lopez is a dynamic and athletic puncher who would likely try to use constant pressure and his powerful jab to close the distance and force Stevenson into a mistake. The best example of Lopez’s game plan is his knockout victory over Richard Commey, where he waited for the perfect moment to land a single, devastating punch to end the night. However, Lopez’s defense has been questionable at times, as seen in his loss to George Kambosos Jr., where he was caught in exchanges and was ultimately outworked. He will need to be much tighter defensively.
