Spence Retires After Tszyu Loss

Errol Spence Jr. has retired after his loss to Tim Tszyu.

Tszyu beat Spence via a unanimous decision to 117-111, 117-111, and 118-110. The three-year layoff had taken something that did not come back. Tszyu did not need to be spectacular. Spence said the right things afterward.

"It was a good showing by Tim. I answered a lot of questions about myself, and now it's time to go home with my family and start a new life,” Spence

When pressed on whether that meant retirement, the answer was immediate.

"Yeah, for sure. I've got my faculties intact. My money is good and working for itself, so everything's good, man. I've got a beautiful family and I thank God that I'm able to leave this sport with my faculties intact and my family by my side. Everything's going to go well,” Spence

Trainer Ronnie Shields had said before the fight that a loss would end Spence's career immediately — that he had entered this camp to satisfy himself rather than to build toward another title run, and that losing would remove any reason to continue. Spence confirmed it in the ring.

Wins over Mikey Garcia, Danny Garcia, Yordenis Ugas, Shawn Porter show that Spence had beaten the elite names. However, he is no longer the same fighter.
