Stevenson On Davis Fallout: 'Some Type Of Insecurity'

Shakur Stevenson believes insecurity drives Gervonta Davis's animosity toward him, years after their friendship collapsed.

Stevenson, speaking on his podcast this week, said he cannot pinpoint a single incident that caused the rift but noted Davis never acknowledges his abilities anymore. "I don't know why there's so much hatred upon me, but it is what it is," Stevenson said, per Bad Left Hook. "If you listen to him, he don't never say nothing good about me. But I think it comes to some type of insecurity."

Stevenson Says He Keeps It Classy Despite History

The lightweight contender contrasted his current approach with his younger years, when he admits he was disrespectful toward Davis. Now, Stevenson said, he tries to give credit where it is due. "I always say he's a special fighter, he's a tremendous fighter," he explained. "I try not to talk down on his name because I know that he's a good fighter. But if you listen to him, he don't got nothing good to say about me."

Stevenson added that he plans to maintain his integrity going forward and hopes Davis resolves his issues, both personal and professional. Davis has not fought since early this year and faces an uncertain timeline for his return to the ring.

The bad blood between the two lightweights has simmered for years, though both remain top names in the lower weight classes. A potential matchup would generate major money, but Davis's camp has not signaled any interest in making that fight happen.
