Dr. Gustavo Medeiros, Barcelos' physician, told MMA Fighting that the bantamweight is lucid and talking. "At this moment, he is lucid and oriented," Medeiros said. "He is hospitalized strictly as a matter of protocol. He needs to remain under observation for a few days to assess his condition and make sure that everything remains stable and that he continues to do well." Reports indicate Barcelos is walking and eating.

The incident came on the same weekend that Mexican boxer Arturo Torres died following a seventh-round collapse in Mexicali. Torres, 26, was diagnosed with a brain blood clot, underwent emergency surgery, and spent six days in a medically induced coma before passing. The two episodes underscored the inherent risks fighters accept every time they enter the cage or ring.
