Prograis Promises To Stop Haney
Regis Prograis has promised to stop Devin Haney when they meet in a potential October fight.
The WBC recently confirmed that they would make Haney a ‘champion in recess’ at lightweight, as the ‘Dream’ decided to move up to 140.
As a result, that ruled out the chance of the WBC lightweight mandatory Shakur Stevenson facing Haney.
And now that the focus is on Prograis, the WBC junior-welterweight champion is keen on making a statement against Haney.
Prograis’ Comments
"I’m stopping Haney. I don’t care what he’s got. We working on s**t right now. If I don’t, I’m going to hurt him for twelve rounds. If I had knocked Zorrilla in the first round, I’d have been fighting Sandor Martin. That’s my mandatory," Prograis
Nevertheless, stopping Haney would be a huge statement. The ‘Dream’ is undefeated with major wins over George Kambosos Jr. and Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Not only that, but given that Haney is a big lightweight who is moving up, he is naturally going to fill out at the weight making him stronger.
Although that may be the case, Prograis does have knockout power. Prograis has 24 knockouts in 30 bouts with one loss.
In contrast to this, Haney is not the biggest puncher. The undisputed lightweight champion may have 30 wins, but only 15 of those have been by way of knockout.
That may be enough to deter opponents at 135, facing Prograis at 140 may not be so easy. After all, Prograis is focused on the task at hand.
"I’m going to beat your a**. This Haney s**t ain’t going to be nothing like that [Zorrilla]. He is trying to come up to 140 to see if he can get this belt, which he is not going to get, I’m Stopping Haney!"
Moving forward, both Haney and Prograis have a huge fight on their hands. A win for Haney would make him a two-division champion.
As for Prograis, a victory could propel him into becoming a pay-per-view star, with huge mega fights later down the line. Time will tell.
