Meta UFC rankings use math model, not A.I., officials say
The UFC's new Meta ranking system does not use artificial intelligence, according to officials who briefed media outlets on the rollout Monday.
Representatives from the promotion told CBS Sports that the system relies on a mathematical model rather than A.I., despite UFC CEO Dana White describing it as an artificial intelligence project over the past several months. "We didn't build an A.I. to rank fighters," one representative said during the presentation. "A.I. was used in creating the system, but on a week to week basis, when you see the rankings come out, it's not because A.I. said so."
How the mathematical formula works
The model operates through what officials called an Elo rating system, which processes results automatically without weekly human input. "There are no decisions made week-to-week," the representative explained. "All the decisions have already been made. From now until the death of the universe, there are rules, and the rules will be followed." Victory and opponent quality drive roughly 95 percent of the rankings, per MMA Mania, with finishes providing a minor boost and fight statistics like significant strikes excluded entirely.
Rankings begin to decay after 18 months of inactivity. Bouts older than five years carry diminishing weight, meaning scores could shift even between fight cards as past achievements lose value in the formula.
Both the Meta system and the existing media panel rankings appear on UFC.com for now. If the mathematical model proves reliable, the promotion plans to phase out human voters altogether.
