PFL CEO won't force Usman Nurmagomedov contract extension

Tom Rashid
UFC & MMA Lead Writer ·

PFL CEO John Martin says the promotion will make undefeated lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov an offer when his current deal expires but would accept him leaving for the UFC if that's what the fighter wants.

Nurmagomedov has one fight remaining under his PFL contract, according to Sherdog. Martin told The Sheehan Show that the organisation will extend an offer to retain the champion but isn't building its business model around individual stars.

PFL prioritises format over star power

"We're focused on building a brand," Martin said on the podcast. The CEO added that PFL would have no problem with Nurmagomedov moving to the UFC after fulfilling his current obligation.

The stance reflects PFL's tournament-based system, which differs from the UFC's approach of promoting individual fighters as marquee draws. Nurmagomedov, cousin of retired UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, remains undefeated through his professional career and has defended the PFL lightweight title since the promotion absorbed Bellator's roster.

Nurmagomedov is scheduled to compete at PFL New York on July 31. Whether he re-signs or tests free agency after that bout will hinge on the organisation's offer and the fighter's long-term goals.
