PFL CEO won't rush Usman Nurmagomedov contract talks

Professional Fighters League CEO John Martin says the promotion will hold off on contract talks with lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov until after his July 31 title defense against Archie Colgan.

Nurmagomedov, unbeaten in 21 fights, faces fellow unblemished prospect Colgan (13-0) at UBS Arena in Long Island on the final bout of his current deal. Martin told Home of Fight that PFL has not yet engaged with the champion's camp about renewal. "For Nurmagomedov, his legacy is clear. He is a fantastic champion," Martin said, per Home of Fight. "This is his last fight under the agreement. We haven't engaged in any discussions with him yet. Let's get through the fight and see what he wants to do."

PFL prioritizes brand over individual stars

Martin drew a parallel to the UFC's model, saying PFL must focus on its brand rather than hinge on one or two fighters. He described the approach as building a system to develop multiple stars early and retaining them only when it makes sense for both sides. If Nurmagomedov opts to leave after July, Martin suggested the promotion would move forward with younger talent in the pipeline.

"He's a great part of the PFL. We love having him here," Martin added. "And if it makes sense for us to keep him, and he wants to do it, we'd love to have him stay. We just have to wait and see what happens." Martin indicated that no single athlete would define the entire organization, echoing the UFC's long-term philosophy.
