Carlo Paalam's silver medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan has extended the Philippines' wait for boxing gold to 16 years, raising deeper questions about who will carry the national program forward as its core group of Olympic medalists ages out.

Paalam dropped a split decision to Japan's Rui Yamaguchi in the men's 55kg final on Friday, falling 3-2 on the scorecards. Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines president Marcus Manalo called the result "a robbery," per ESPN, though the decision stands. The silver was the country's lone boxing medal in Aichi-Nagoya and marked the fifth consecutive Asian Games cycle without gold since Rey Saludar won the flyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light flyweight title in Guangzhou in 2010.

The campaign exposed a more pressing concern than one controversial scorecard. Paalam was the only member of ABAP's seven-fighter squad to reach the medal rounds. Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Eumir Marcial withdrew before the Games due to a quick turnaround from his latest pro fight. Olympic medalists Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas both lost their opening bouts. By 2030, when the next Asian Games run in Doha, Paalam will be 32, Petecio 38, Villegas 35. Those numbers do not disqualify anyone from competition, but they underline the succession challenge facing a program that has leaned heavily on the same core for a decade.

Manalo said the federation would not stop pushing forward. The Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Riyadh run from December 11-21, followed by the world championships in Kazakhstan in April 2027, the first major qualifier for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Those events will test whether ABAP can replenish a pipeline that showed little evidence in Japan of a new generation ready to assume the podium responsibility its predecessors have carried since Tokyo 2021.
