Ortiz and Golden Boy Settle Legal Dispute

Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Golden Boy Promotions have settled their legal dispute, clearing the path for the Jaron Ennis fight to move forward.

The two sides announced the resolution on Friday, with both parties expressing optimism about what comes next after a months-long contractual conflict that had blocked Ortiz from competing entirely.

"Our relationship with Vergil has spanned more than a decade, and we are proud to have played a role in his development into one of the sport's premier fighters. We look forward to continuing our partnership and working together with Vergil Jr., Rick Mirigian, and the rest of Team Ortiz to deliver the biggest fights possible for boxing fans,” Oscar De La Hoya

"I'm very grateful that Golden Boy and I were able to come to an understanding and resolve everything. I'm excited to move forward and make the biggest fights happen, including the Ennis fight,” Ortiz

The legal timeline was complicated. Ortiz filed suit against Golden Boy in January, alleging breach of contract. Golden Boy responded with a $10 million lawsuit against manager Rick Mirigian, claiming he had shared details of Ortiz's contractual position with rival promoters. An injunction was obtained blocking Ortiz from fighting until the arbitration concluded. The settlement terms are confidential.

The clock, in theory, starts now for the Ennis fight. Both men are unbeaten. Both hit extremely hard — Ortiz has an 85 percent knockout rate, Ennis has stopped 32 of 36 opponents. The stylistic matchup raises legitimate questions about which version of power and precision wins at this weight, and the personal dimension — Ennis was ringside for Ortiz's last fight and made his callout public immediately — gives the bout an edge that manufactured rivalries rarely have.
