McGregor On His Recent Struggles
Conor McGregor addressed the rumours directly on social media, and the admission embedded in his denial is the part worth reading carefully.
A fan on X asked whether McGregor was using recreational drugs in the aftermath of his UFC 329 collapse. McGregor's response confirmed he was not — but also revealed how close to the edge the night may have pushed him.
"I have not and will not take any mind-altering substances. I feel if the fight had of went any different, favourably or otherwise, even if the fight got to take place at least, I may have cracked the seal on this and ended back in the cycle. However it went the way it went and I am awaiting my surgery and planning my recovery, so zero mind-altering substances have entered my body whatsoever. More time under extreme discipline is required and that is it. I find extreme discipline most enjoyable anyway so happy days.” McGregor
McGregor has spoken publicly about his relationship with alcohol and, at various points, cocaine — including his acknowledgment during the Nikita Hand civil trial that he had used cocaine around the time of the 2018 incident. His UFC 329 pre-fight build-up included discussion of how launching Proper No. Twelve whiskey had surrounded him with alcohol during his years away from competition and how faith and sobriety had become the foundation of his comeback.
The surgery is scheduled. The recovery timeline for a serious knee injury at 37 is measured in months, and a realistic return would put any fight no earlier than late 2027. He has said publicly that the Holloway trilogy is the fight he wants when he comes back.
Whether the period of enforced inactivity and recovery ahead of him produces the discipline he is describing or tests it in the ways he is clearly aware of remains to be seen. The fact that he is talking about the risk openly, in public, suggests at minimum that he is thinking about it clearly.
