Chiesa: Morales' Size Could Pose Problem For Makhachev

UFC analyst Michael Chiesa sees Michael Morales as a serious threat to Islam Makhachev's welterweight title reign.

Chiesa told listeners on a recent podcast that Morales' combination of size and wrestling credentials could create unique problems for the champion, who defended his belt against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330. Morales has torn through the 170-pound ranks and many consider him next in line ahead of Carlos Prates.

Why Morales Matches Up Well Against Makhachev

"Morales is the biggest guy at 170 pounds," Chiesa said, per MMA Junkie. "He is the biggest welterweight, so the size and the wrestling, I think that could give him more problems than Prates. But I do think Prates has more capability of landing a knockout shot."

Chiesa noted that while Morales sometimes gets wild with his striking — which can create openings for wrestlers to shoot — his physical advantages might offset that risk. "His wrestling chops, size, and physicality," Chiesa added, "I think that could pose a big problem for Islam."

The former fighter turned analyst gave Prates credit for sharper finishing ability but suggested the Brazilian would be less likely to overextend and create takedown lanes. Morales' willingness to get scrappy, Chiesa argued, cuts both ways against a grappler of Makhachev's caliber.

Makhachev recently dismissed Morales as a top contender, telling reporters he could not recall the last time the prospect fought. No official word yet on when the champion will return or who he faces next.
