Miller Earns UFC Deal With Rare Shoulder Choke

Trent Miller landed a UFC contract Tuesday night after submitting Douglas Henrique Rodrigues with a Von Flue choke in the second round at Dana White's Contender Series.

The finish marked the second time in DWCS history that a fighter secured the rarely seen shoulder choke, per Sherdog. Miller entered the middleweight bout as a massive underdog but controlled Rodrigues on the mat in the opening frame before locking in the submission at 4:32 of round two.

Miller Erases Last Year's DWCS Stoppage Loss

The 30-year-old revealed afterward that he had never before finished a fight with the Von Flue. "I knew in the first round, once I got on top of him, I controlled," Miller told UFC on Paramount+ in his post-fight interview. "So that was the plan: second round, get back on top, I felt the choke was there and I went for it. I've never actually got it in a fight."

Miller suffered a stoppage loss to Ryan Gandra in his first Contender Series appearance last year, which he called the worst performance of his career. The win moves him to 10-3 overall and caps a redemption arc after critics questioned his return to the show.

"I had so many doubters, so many haters come at me," Miller added. "For me to be able to shut them up like that, it's amazing." The promotion has not yet announced his first Octagon assignment.
