McGregor injury at UFC 329 called 'biggest disappointment' ever
Conor McGregor's return to the octagon lasted one minute and nine seconds before his knee gave out on the first exchange of UFC 329's main event Saturday night in Las Vegas.
McGregor attempted a flying kick against Max Holloway at T-Mobile Arena, landed awkwardly, and crumpled to the canvas as his leg buckled. Holloway was awarded the TKO victory, but the anti-climactic finish left the sold-out crowd of 20,076 stunned. According to MMA Mania, former UFC champion Michael Bisping didn't mince words on the broadcast.
"It was just an utter disappointment," Bisping said, per the report. "We were all hyped up waiting for the return of Conor McGregor. Will it be the greatest comeback in sports history? No! It was the biggest disappointment in combat sports history."
Record gate and instant letdown
Bisping added that the injury "completely sucked the air out of the building," noting he felt for both fighters and fans who spent money to witness what was supposed to be a marquee comeback. Dana White confirmed in the post-fight press conference that the event drew a record $26.4 million gate.
The loss drops McGregor to one win in his last five fights, with his only victory in nearly a decade coming almost six years ago. He had been away from competition for five years before Saturday's abrupt ending.
No timeline has been announced for McGregor's recovery or next fight.
