McGregor Reveals Torn ACL And Meniscus
Conor McGregor has confirmed the injury that ended his UFC 329 return: a torn ACL and meniscus in his right knee.
The diagnosis is the same category of injury he suffered in the original Holloway fight in 2013, when he tore his ACL and pushed through to win a unanimous decision. This time, the damage came in the opposite leg. McGregor posted the update to X alongside a timeline for his return and something more personal — a reflection on what the injury may have spared him from.
"Update: It was ACL and meniscus. It is the same injury as the first Holloway fight, only this time the opposite leg. Quite shocking. I returned to competition within 9 months to fight Diego Brandao back then. With today's regenerative medicine advancements and improved training methods it is well within my realm to return by next summer,” McGregor
He offered early indicators that the recovery is progressing: "I am walking without a crutch. I done leg extension machine work the other day to no issue. So I can walk without aid, and activate my quad under resistance. All very positive."
Then came the part that speaks to where McGregor's head is beyond the physical: "I wonder was I saved from something worse here. I believe so. I would have attended the after party as 'the man' and who knows then. I believe I was saved. Thank you God. On we go, no sad stories.”
Conor wants the Holloway trilogy. Holloway said in the octagon that night that he wants it too and has signalled a return in 2027. The timing, if both fighters stay healthy, aligns. Whether the third fight gets made depends on a recovery that goes without complication, a UFC willing to extend or honour the final fight on his contract, and a version of McGregor that arrives at next summer's return in better physical condition than he has managed in recent years.
