Man Admits Punching Joe Cordina In Cardiff Incident

A Cardiff man has pleaded guilty to punching former IBF featherweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super-featherweight world champion Joe Cordina outside a petrol station.

Jamie O'Brien, 33, appeared at Cardiff Magistrates' Court and admitted assaulting Cordina by beating during an altercation at a Texaco garage in Pentwyn in February, the BBC reports. O'Brien received a conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £85 in court costs plus a £26 surcharge.

Mental Health Crisis Led To Detention

Judge Murphy heard that O'Brien was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the incident and was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act, according to the BBC report.

Cordina, who held the IBF featherweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super-featherweight title in 2022 and reclaimed it briefly in 2023, faces two charges of assault by beating O'Brien stemming from the same incident. The Welsh fighter has denied both charges.

Cordina's trial is scheduled for October at Cardiff Magistrates' Court.
