Makhachev Vows To Take More Risks Against Garry
Islam Makhachev says he plans to abandon caution when he defends his welterweight belt against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 on August 15.
The champion told MMA Junkie he's hunting a finish after reviewing his decision win over Jack Della Maddalena — a performance that left him frustrated. "This fight, I will take more risks to finish my opponent, because I like finishing my opponents," Makhachev said.
Makhachev Sees Ground Weakness In Garry
Makhachev enters as a heavy favorite but said the job gets done once the fight hits the mat. He cited Garry's ground game as the opening, noting the Irishman has solid striking and reach control but lacks defense in grappling exchanges. "I see when I take him down, it's gonna be a finish," Makhachev said, per the report.
The Russian champion went on to say his bout with Della Maddalena didn't reflect his true finishing ability. He watched that fight back and saw missed opportunities, admitting he fought just to secure the second belt rather than pressing for the stoppage. Makhachev is 28-1 with 16 straight wins.
Garry has never been finished in his pro career. Makhachev gets his chance to change that when the two meet in less than two weeks.
