Makhachev Throws Towel After Fighter Dislocates Shoulder
Islam Makhachev stopped Magomed Magomedov's fight at PFL Tampa on Friday night after the bantamweight dislocated his left shoulder late in the second round.
Magomedov, a former Bellator title challenger, was grappling with UFC veteran Daniel Marcos in the preliminary card when the injury occurred. According to MMA Fighting, Makhachev and the corner crew spent the full minute between rounds attempting to relocate the shoulder without success. A doctor examined the fighter and cleared him to continue despite the damage.
Corner Stops Fight Seconds Into Third Round
When the third round began, Marcos immediately moved the injured arm during a clinch against the cage. The reigning UFC lightweight champion threw in the towel 11 seconds into the frame to prevent further injury to his fighter.
The result went into the books as a third-round TKO loss for Magomedov, who was making his PFL debut against the former UFC bantamweight. Makhachev cornered the Dagestani fighter in what marked a rare stoppage by towel in a major MMA promotion this year.
PFL has not yet announced whether Magomedov will require surgery or when he might return to competition.
