Makhachev Questions Validity Of Jones' Win Streak

UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev said Jon Jones' historic win streak should carry an asterisk because of failed drug tests and troubles outside the cage.

Makhachev, who defends his title against Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 311 next month, told ESPN that Jones' record — which includes multiple doping violations and legal incidents — does not hold up under scrutiny when evaluating the longest runs in UFC history.

Jones' Record Under Scrutiny

The lightweight king is closing in on tying Jones' 16-fight unbeaten streak inside the Octagon, but Makhachev believes his own run stands on firmer ground. Jones has tested positive for banned substances on multiple occasions and faced legal trouble throughout his career, including a 2015 hit-and-run incident that cost him the heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight title.

Jones responded on social media, defending his legacy and suggesting Makhachev focus on his upcoming opponent rather than debating pound-for-pound rankings. The heavyweight champion has long maintained that contaminated supplements caused his positive tests.

Makhachev puts his 14-fight winning streak on the line against Tsarukyan at UFC 311 on January 18 in Inglewood, California. A win would move him one step closer to Jones' mark — and fuel another round of debate over whose streak truly stands tallest.
