Makhachev On McGregor Boxing Match Threat
UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev says Conor McGregor would pose a threat for only one round in a potential boxing match.
Makhachev told Ushatayka that he would entertain a crossover bout with McGregor specifically, despite other potential opponents. "He's dangerous, yes, in the first round," Makhachev said, per Bloody Elbow. "But after that, I don't think he has much of a chance."
Makhachev Eyes Zuffa Boxing After UFC Career
The Dagestani champion recently appeared at a Zuffa Boxing event and hinted at competing for the promotion once his UFC run concludes. When asked about potential purses for a McGregor boxing match, Makhachev said money was secondary. "Honestly, regardless of money, I'd box specifically against Conor," he said.
Makhachev and McGregor have traded barbs for months, a rivalry that stems from McGregor's 2018 submission loss to Makhachev's mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229. Makhachev cornered Nurmagomedov that night as a rising lightweight prospect.
McGregor has not responded to the comments, according to BJ Penn. The Irishman suffered a severe leg injury seconds into his UFC 329 comeback earlier this year but has stated he intends to return to competition in 2027.
