Makhachev Accepts Burroughs Callout With One Catch
Islam Makhachev has responded to Jordan Burroughs' callout following the Olympic wrestling champion's dominant performance in Moscow, but the UFC lightweight titleholder wants the match on his terms.
Burroughs took less than 90 seconds to defeat Magomed Kurbanaliev via 10-0 technical fall at RAF Moscow earlier this month, then immediately challenged Makhachev to a wrestling bout in Russia. "Islam, where are you? Hey, I came to your country, to your capital city, and tech-fall'd one of your champions," Burroughs said in his post-fight interview, per Sherdog. "I will be back to Russia very soon and the only person I want to share the stage with is Islam."
Makhachev Counters With MMA Stipulation
The Dagestani champion praised Burroughs but made clear any matchup would happen under MMA rules. "Congrats on your win legend," Makhachev wrote on social media. "In the cage, anywhere anytime."
Several active UFC fighters including Khamzat Chimaev, Arman Tsarukyan and Sean Brady have competed in RAF wrestling events during their MMA careers. Makhachev has not taken a pure wrestling or grappling match during his UFC tenure.
Burroughs captured Olympic gold in 2012 and remains one of the most decorated American wrestlers in history. No date has been set for any potential crossover between the two champions.
