Leigh Wood Calls Out Mayweather

Leigh Wood has called out Floyd Mayweather Jr. after the latter backed his 17-year-old fighter Curmel Moton to beat him.

Such a statement did take boxing fans aback, given that Moton has not had a professional fight.

Moton, however, has made enough of an impression with Mayweather that he wants him to have a title shot.

As of now, Moton has sparred Gervonta Davis and has a record of winning 18 titles at amateur level. However, facing Wood, is another level.

The former is the current WBA featherweight champion, and at the age of 35, he is entering into the latter end of his career.

Although that may be the case, his experience is certainly a factor that would aid him in the fight. And yet, Mayweather was confident of a victory.

Mayweather On Wood

"Leigh Wood – I’ve got a 126lber Curmel Moton, that would be a good match now. He’s turning professional. We take chances to be great.

"Eddie Hearn is a good businessman and I’m a good businessman. Our guy is 0-0, we’ll take the fight. I’ll put all the money up for both sides. My guy’s 17, he’s destined to be great. Remember I told you that," Mayweather

In response, Wood dismissed the idea of the fight by targeting Mayweather himself. This is understandable since Wood will likely make a lot more money facing Mayweather, who is no longer a professional.

Not only that, but a defeat to a 17-year-old would damage his career and ultimately raise question marks over whether he should retire. So far now, Wood was focused on ‘TBE’ himself.

Wood Responds

"@FloydMayweather You’re closer to my age than your prospect is to me. I’ll give a few lbs away to dance with a great, you ever been to the city ground?"

Regardless of what Wood ends up doing, his main task is to ensure he gets a win in his next fight.

He faces Josh Warrington on October 7th, 2023, in a mega domestic clash. So all eyes will be on that fight moving forward.
