Lamont Roach Jr. Vs. William Zepeda Preview

Lamont Roach Jr. and William Zepeda are set to collide for the vacant WBC lightweight world title on August 1, as we preview the fight.

Roach comes off back-to-back controversial majority draws in 2025—first against WBA champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis in March, followed by a hard-fought battle against Isaac "Pitbull" Cruz in December. Despite the judge's scorecards, Roach's elite ring IQ and grit earned him another shot at the top spot in the 135-pound division.

Zepeda returns to the ring after a year-long layoff following a unanimous decision loss to Shakur Stevenson in July 2025. Prior to that, "El Camarón" established himself as one of boxing's most dangerous lightweight contenders, holding victories over former world champions Tevin Farmer, Rene Alvarado, and Maxi Hughes.

The Approach

Against Zepeda, who comes forward relentlessly and builds his offense through accumulated pressure, Roach will use lateral movement and punch selection to stay a half-step ahead. He'll look to make Zepeda miss early and score cleanly on the counter, establishing a rhythm where Zepeda is always slightly behind him. Body work will be important for Roach too — not to hurt Zepeda necessarily, but to give the judges something to reward in rounds where the margin is thin.

Against Roach, Zepeda will push the pace from the opening bell, cutting off the ring and forcing engagement rather than allowing Roach to box from the outside and control distance. Zepeda is most dangerous in the middle rounds when accumulated pressure starts to register, and he'll be looking to land his right hand as the primary scoring and finishing weapon once Roach's movement begins to slow.
