George Kambosos Jr. had a successful start to his time with Matchroom Boxing, beating Jake Wyllie in a unanimous decision: 117-111, 117-111, 115-113.

The fight could have troubled Kambosos since Wyllie was a last-minute replacement. Daud Yordan withdrew from the fight after suffering from illness, giving Wyllie a chance. The two fighters produced a thrilling fight in front of a packed-out Australian crowd, but Kambosos was the better man. Wyllie started the fight well, landing some jabs and his right hand. However, Kambosos finished the round stronger with a series of left hands.

The left hand continued to do damage, with Kambosos landing another in the third round. Wyllie regrouped in the fifth, landing a massive right hand on the chin. But Kambosos’ output, followed by lefts and rights, meant he finished the fifth strongest. Kambosos connected with a big left hook in the seventh, but Wyllie continued to walk forward.

Kambosos found a jab and left hand in the eighth after Wyllie started the round the better man. Wyllie found a second wind in the ninth. A clash of heads resulted in a cut on Kambosos’ forehead, allowing Wyllie to land two big right hands. Kambosos hit back with left hands and uppercuts in the tenth to stop Wyllie’s momentum. Wyllie need a knockout, but it never looked like coming. The two men traded in the final bell, but it was Kambosos’ night. Kambosos is now targeting a fight against IBF Junior Welterweight Champion Richardson Hitchins.

Post-Fight

"It was a good war, he’s a tough kid, I know he was fully prepared. My first fight at 140, he’s the best domestic guy at 140 outside of obviously me and the big names, but he’s got a lot in his future. I will help him out as the future goes on.

"Good on him, man, great fight. He was tough, strong, he gave me a good fight. I felt great at the start, first four or five rounds, but he started coming on and I knew he would. I would’ve loved to put him away but credit to him, we won. He’s a tip-tap guy, I know he’ll run. We’ll get my cut fixed up and let’s do [the Hitchins fight]," Kambosos said

"That was a war, it was brilliant. I prepared for this on five days’ notice, I was so excited for this moment, and I feel like I’ve won so many people over. I fought my heart out tonight and I feel like I’m destined for great things," Wyllie said
