Usyk vacates world titles, says 'continuation lies ahead'

Oleksandr Usyk has vacated his world titles and called the move a springboard for new opportunities. The heavyweight made the announcement through BBC Sport on Thursday.

“This is a well-considered decision that I am confident will open new opportunities for me. This is not the end of the story. The continuation lies ahead.”

— Oleksandr Usyk, via BBC Sport

What Oleksandr Usyk said

Usyk unified the heavyweight division twice, first in 2022 and again after his rematch win in December 2024. He previously held all four major belts at cruiserweight before moving up. The Ukrainian has now relinquished his championship status voluntarily.

What it moves

The decision leaves the heavyweight landscape open. Usyk gave no detail on his next move but ruled out retirement. His statement suggests a shift in direction rather than an exit from the sport.
