Joshua To Have Elbow Surgery – ‘Out Of The Gym For 6-8 Weeks'

Anthony Joshua will have surgery on his elbow, which is expected to keep him out of training for around six to eight weeks.

Joshua has not boxed since Daniel Dubois stopped him, as he missed out on becoming the IBF Heavyweight Champion. There was speculation that Joshua would rematch Dubois immediately. However, that never went ahead, which has now partly been due to Joshua’s injury. Eddie Hearn recently said that he expects Joshua to make a comeback in the summer, but the Matchroom Boxing promoter has not named any opponents.

There was a demand to see Joshua face Tyson Fury after the Gypsy King suffered his second loss to Oleksandr Usyk. The Joshua fight was the biggest one out there for him, but Fury ended up announcing his retirement, meaning that fight was off the table. The Gypsy King has recently returned to training with his longtime trainer, SugarHill Steward. This has created speculation that Fury could come back from retirement with an eye on Joshua.

Equally, Joshua could take the Dubois rematch if the latter were to beat Usyk in his next fight to become the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion. Other contenders in the division include the likes of Joseph Parker or even Deontay Wilder. Parker is on the best run of his career, having defeated Deontay Wilder, Zhilei Zhang and Martin Bakole in his last three fights.

Joshua’s Injury

Meanwhile, Wilder has consistently said he still wants the Joshua fight. They were previously on course to face each other for an undisputed fight in 2019. They had also signed a deal to face each other, which was then called off once Wilder lost to Joseph Parker. Either way, Joshua is looking to get back to action as soon as possible.

"When do you want me back, people? I’m trying to get my body right. I’ve got to actually have a little surgery on my elbow, a small surgery, some time in May. We’re just finalising the details. I’ll be out of the gym for maybe six to eight weeks and then when I’m healed I’ll be back," Joshua said
