Jon Jones Compared To Michael Jordan
Dana White has chosen an unusual moment to heap praise on Jon Jones.
As relations between the two sides continue to fray publicly, the UFC CEO has likened the former heavyweight champion to Michael Jordan and reaffirmed his belief that Jones is the greatest fighter in the organisation's history.
"You're looking for your Michael Jordan, it would be Jon Jones, who is the greatest. Jon Jones is in his forties now. He's undefeated still, never been beat. And he's moved up and down weight classes. It is very, very unique and hard to be undefeated in the UFC,” White said
The timing of the praise is striking. Jones has requested his UFC release after claiming he was offered an inadequate deal to appear on the UFC Freedom 250 card at the White House on June 14 — a card White has insisted Jones was never seriously considered for in the first place. The two accounts are irreconcilable, and the public contradiction has sharpened a falling out that has been building since Jones relinquished the heavyweight title and retired rather than face Tom Aspinall last year.
Since then Jones has taken concrete steps toward finding a way out of his contractual obligations. He has spoken openly about wanting to fight Francis Ngannou outside the UFC, acknowledged that his contract is the primary obstacle, and most recently reached out to Tyron Woodley for the contact details of attorney Sam Spira — the lawyer who constructed the legal framework that allowed Conor McGregor to box Floyd Mayweather while under UFC contract in 2017.
White's Michael Jordan comparison is accurate as a sporting assessment and difficult to dispute on the merits. Jones is the most dominant fighter the UFC has produced, won titles at light heavyweight and heavyweight. Whether the praise is genuine, strategic, or both is harder to read — but lavishing the greatest-ever label on a fighter who is actively trying to leave the promotion is a complicated message to send to both Jones and the wider roster.
