Joe Cordina vs Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz: Preview & Betting Tips

Former IBF super-featherweight champion Joe Cordina returns to the ring on Saturday for a 10-round lightweight bout against Mexico’s Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz at Manchester Arena.
The fight marks Cordina’s (17-1, 9 KO’s) return to the 135-pound division, where he previously held British and Commonwealth titles earlier in his career. Now 33, the Welshman is looking to rebuild momentum after a disrupted 2024 in which a planned bout with American star Shakur Stevenson fell through due to injury.
Cordina now faces a younger, powerful opponent in Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz (17-1, 13 KO’s), who brings a dangerous knockout record but remains untested at elite level.

Joe Cordina vs Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz: Analysis

While not the biggest puncher, Cordina is a very good technical boxer, he is defensively sound, and can control distance with his jab, footwork and feints. Cordina often settles in and begins to dictate tempo by rounds 4 or 5, and I expect that to be no different in this one.
However, Gonzalez Quiroz has the typical Mexican style, so he will make the Welshman work early on in order to try and dominate the centre of the ring. The 24-year-old has absolutely nothing to lose here, which makes him a dangerous comeback fight for Cordina to take, especially given his knockout record. But, there is a clear difference in terms of technical skill, experience and boxing brain which all favours the former team GB Olympic medalist.
Cordina vs Gonzalez Quiroz: Prediction & Betting Tips
I fully expect Joe Cordina to return to the ring and put on a classy display of boxing, where he uses his jab to the head and body along with feints to control his opponent’s posture.
Gonzalez Quiroz brings freshness and knockout power, but his experience and technical ability is lightyears apart. Of course, we cannot forget to mention British fighters’ recent record against Mexican boxers; it doesn’t look good for the UK. But Cordina should be backed to get one back for Britain this weekend.
I fancy the Welshman to get the Mexican out of there given the fact that he’s been stopped once previously in his career in a fight that was lower than the lightweight limit, and it came against a guy that has since gone on to register a 9-10 record.
My pick is Joe Cordina to win in rounds 6-10 at odds of 3.50 (Sky Bet). Cordina always takes a few rounds to get into rhythm, and once around the halfway stage, he should begin to break his man down before forcing his corner or the ref to stop the fight.
