Vergil Ortiz calls Xander Zayas a quitter after Ennis loss

Vergil Ortiz unloaded on Xander Zayas moments after Jaron Ennis stopped the defending titleholder in seven rounds Saturday night, calling Zayas a quitter and claiming he would knock Ennis out cold if they ever meet.

Ortiz took to X immediately after Boots became a two-division unified champion at welterweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super welterweight, writing that Zayas "looked straight to your corner after you got dropped that last time," according to Bad Left Hook. "You're a p*ssy," Ortiz wrote. "You did better than I thought you were gonna do but you're a quitter, I can't believe I just saw you do that."

Ortiz claims he would finish Ennis

The 28-year-old also promised to knock out Ennis if given the same openings. "Yea, I'm sleeping Jaron," Ortiz posted. "If I get him like that I promise you I get him out of there." Ortiz has been sidelined since stopping Erickson Lubin in November 2025 while locked in a promotional dispute with Golden Boy, and was originally slated to face Ennis in the fight that Zayas took instead.

Ortiz also fired back at DAZN commentator Sergio Mora, defending his own resume and arguing that his path to a title shot has been more legitimate than Zayas'. "Sorry I wasn't given free belts with one of the weakest resumes in boxing," he wrote, per the report. Ortiz added that he has "earned my shot before [X]ander did a thousand times over" and suggested that if he had won belts from similar opposition, the boxing world would clown their credibility.

Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya said recently that the promotional issues are moving toward resolution and expects Ortiz back in the ring before the end of 2026.
