Inoue Eyes Attendance Record
Naoya Inoue wants to attempt to break his own attendance record.
The four-weight world champion fought just once in 2026, beating Junto Nakatani by unanimous decision in May in front of 55,000 fans at the Tokyo Dome, setting a new attendance record for Japanese boxing in the process.
When he returns to the ring for a tentative date in February 2027, he could break that mark again. Reports suggest a bout between Inoue and Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez is being targeted for the Mizuho PayPay Dome Fukuoka, with organizers hoping to surpass the 55,000-fan turnout that showed up for the Nakatani fight. A win on that scale would further cement Inoue's standing as boxing's biggest draw outside the United States and add another chapter to a resume already built on record-setting nights in Japan.
Rodriguez, a three-weight world champion, is considered — like Inoue — one of boxing's leading pound-for-pound fighters, having built his case with wins over Wisaksil Wangek, Sunny Edwards and Juan Francisco Estrada. He made his first appearance at 118 pounds in June, stopping Antonio Vargas in the sixth round to claim the WBA bantamweight title and immediately establishing himself as a live threat in a new weight class.
For the Inoue fight to happen, it would need to take place by March, since Inoue is planning to move up to featherweight shortly after. That timeline creates an eight-pound gap between the two fighters that would need to close quickly if the bout is to be made at all, adding a layer of urgency to negotiations already racing against Inoue's own weight plans.
