Ilia Topuria size disadvantage exposed in Gaethje loss

Tom Rashid
UFC & MMA Lead Writer ·

Ilia Topuria's lightweight experiment ended in a fourth-round corner stoppage at UFC White House, with Justin Gaethje capturing the undisputed title by exploiting a size gap that proved insurmountable. MMA Mania's Andrew Richardson, a professional fighter who trains at Team Alpha Male, wrote that the mismatch was evident from the opening bell as Gaethje landed stiff jabs Topuria could not return while pressuring forward.

The broadcast graphics revealed Topuria is shorter and has less reach than Richardson himself, who competed at flyweight three weight classes below. Gaethje refused to cede his range advantage the way Charles Oliveira had in past Topuria fights, instead forcing the former featherweight king to absorb punishment just to enter boxing range. Richardson noted that when both men threw simultaneous jabs, Topuria consistently got the worse of the exchange solely because of his opponent's length.

Wrestling and fatigue compounded Topuria's struggles

Gaethje mixed in wrestling entries that led to uppercuts, a tactic that frustrated Topuria and left his face mangled. On the canvas, Topuria struggled to control the larger man even when Gaethje was badly fatigued, with scrambles unavailable to the featherweight opponents Topuria had dominated. The size differential contributed to Topuria gassing in a way never seen in his previous fights, Richardson observed.

Richardson argued that Topuria can still find success at lightweight and would likely beat top contender Arman Tsarukyan, but cannot sustain the generational run he began at featherweight. "If Topuria stays at 155 pounds, a second championship reign wouldn't be surprising in the least," Richardson wrote, but added that continuing at lightweight means more losses and bloodshed that will shorten his prime.

The former double champion was transported to a hospital following the brutal loss. Richardson suggested Topuria should return to featherweight and pursue the winner of Alexander Volkanovski versus Movsar Evloev rather than chase glory at a weight class where he gives away physical advantages every time out.
