Ian Machado Garry Mocked Over PETA Commercial

Tom Rashid
UFC & MMA Lead Writer ·

UFC welterweight title challenger Ian Machado Garry's latest marketing move backfired with fans ahead of his championship fight at UFC 330.

Garry appeared in a PETA campaign promoting plant-based diets, declaring in the commercial that switching to plants elevated his performance. "Before I was plant-based, I was strong. But now I'm on another level. My body works better, my mind is locked in. This is the future. And the future is powered by plants," he said in the spot, per BJ Penn.

The commercial landed poorly on social media. One user wrote that Garry makes UFC flyweight Henry Cejudo "look like James Bond," while another asked why the Irishman was "making me want Islam to win." A third questioned whether Garry could "do one thing and not be so insufferably soy."

The PETA spot marks another misstep in Garry's pre-fight media run. Former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub reportedly called one of Garry's recent interviews among the worst he had seen, and multiple fighters including Uros Medic mocked the challenger after controversial comments about women in power.

Garry faces Makhachev on August 9th for the welterweight strap after wins over Belal Muhammad and Carlos Prates. Michael Morales is serving as the backup fighter for the bout.
