Ian Garry vows to beat Islam Makhachev in wrestling realm
Ian Garry wants Islam Makhachev to take him to the mat when they fight for the welterweight title at UFC 330 in Philadelphia on Aug. 15.
The Irish challenger told his Instagram followers that he plans to beat the Dagestani champion in grappling, Makhachev's strongest area, according to Sherdog. Garry recently attended a wrestling camp in Georgia after Makhachev dismissed the idea that wrestling skills can be developed in just a few months.
Garry confident his size and speed will pose new problems
"He's never fought someone as long and tall as me," Garry said. "He's not fought someone as fast as me. He's never fought someone that has the distance management, the boxing capability, the head movement that I do. And also takedown defense. He might get me down, I hope he does. Because I want to prove to the world that he can't submit me. I want to prove to the world that I can get back up. I want to prove to the world that I can beat him in his own world."
Garry added that he intends to "bounce him on his skull" and stop Makhachev's consecutive win streak, ending what he called a chance at "history." Makhachev defended the lightweight belt four times before moving up and stopping Jack Della Maddalena for the welterweight strap last November. Garry won his first eight UFC bouts before losing to Shavkat Rakhmonov, then bounced back with victories over Carlos Prates and Belal Muhammad.
The Xfinity Mobile Arena hosts the Aug. 15 card.
