Hearn Says Whittaker Needs Another Fight Before Bivol

Ben Whittaker needs another fight before challenging Dmitry Bivol or Callum Smith for a world title, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.

Speaking to iFL TV after Whittaker's unanimous decision win over Conor Wallace, Hearn said the heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight's performance fell short of what he must produce against elite opposition. Whittaker holds mandatory status for the winner of Smith-Bivol but struggled late against Wallace, a step below the championship level.

What Hearn Said About Whittaker's Title Readiness

"Ben's got to prove himself against someone like Conor Wallace if we're going to be talking about him against the likes of Callum Smith and Dmitry Bivol," Hearn said, per Bad Left Hook. "If you're going to beat those guys you need to beat Conor Wallace well. And he won on a unanimous decision, let's get that right, but the end was a little bit hairy, shall we say."

Hearn acknowledged that trainer Andy Lee cited illness during fight week but dismissed the excuse. He added that Whittaker's conditioning appeared subpar and that an interim bout is now essential before the Matchroom fighter steps up.

The promoter made clear he expects a sharper showing next time out. Whittaker is expected to return before year's end, with the Smith-Bivol winner likely to emerge in early 2027.
