Hatton Picks Benn To Beat Eubank Jr.
In the latest boxing news, Ricky Hatton has backed Conor Benn to beat Chris Eubank Jr. if the two boxers manage to get a fight made.
The fight had initially been agreed, only for it to be pulled after Benn failed two VADA tests for Clomiphene. In response, Benn maintained that he was innocent, as an investigation was launched.
In response, UKAD suspended the boxer in April as the investigation continued. Thereafter, the suspension was removed by the UK Anti-Doping Agency.
And yet, the BBBofC and UKAD reserved the right to appeal, which they exercised. This was after reports that Benn’s defense was based on jurisdiction over whether UKAD could enforce VADA findings.
Therefore, it had nothing to do with whether Clomiphene was in Benn’s system. As such, Benn was legally allowed to box outside of the UK, as he did with a win over Rodolfo Orozco.
However, the Benn fight is likely to only get made in the UK. As such, Benn must go through the appeal process to clear his name fully. And if that does manage to go ahead, Hatton has picked Benn to win.
Hatton Picks Benn
"There’s a little more caution (from Benn), a little more thinking about his attacks and at the end of the day, whether he’s got the same heart and chin as his dad remains to be seen as he hasn’t had to prove that yet. If he does have the same heart, and the same determination and drive as his dad then I think Benn Jr seems to have a little more savvy and patience and controlled aggression about him so it makes it very exciting. You have to say after Eubank’s last performance against Smith, he has to be a slight favorite but I fancy Conor to win," Hatton said
Nevertheless, the following factors must be considered. Benn failed to stop Orozco, despite hitting the Mexican on numerous occasions.
And given that Orozco is a 154-pound fighter, expecting Benn to do the same against Eubank Jr. at 160 will be tough. This is particularly since the latter is in good form.
Eubank Jr. avenged the loss to Liam Smith by stopping the latter in the tenth round. And with Brian McIntyre as his new trainer, there is room for improvement. That is why Hatton recognized Eubank Jr.’s toughness.
Hatton On The Fight
"It’s a great, great fight. The fact that Chris Eubank Jr has come back from his win against Liam Smith – I thought maybe they would have had a third fight just to because it’s 1-1 which would be fair because you’d say ‘listen I’ve won one fight, you’ve won one fight’. But if it’s a fight against Conor Benn or Gennadiy Golovkin, you’ve got to go for the paydays in boxing. I don’t think any of us expected the last performance (by Eubank Jr) and the fact there is a size difference," Hatton
Ultimately, until the fight is made, a prediction does not pose much value if Benn is not fully cleared. Find all the latest boxing news and MMA breaking updates on boxingblitz.
