George Chuvalo Dies At 89 After Dementia Battle

George Chuvalo died over the weekend on his 89th birthday after a lengthy fight with dementia, Bad Left Hook reports.

The Canadian heavyweight compiled a 93-fight record across 22 years without ever being knocked down, facing Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and Floyd Patterson. Chuvalo challenged for world titles twice, losing decisions to Ernie Terrell in 1965 and Ali the following year. His 1965 war with Patterson earned Ring Magazine Fight of the Year honors, and he stopped Jerry Quarry in 1969.

Chuvalo's Legacy Beyond The Ring

Chuvalo endured severe personal tragedy outside boxing, losing two sons to heroin addiction while his wife and a third child took their own lives. Despite the accumulated grief, he became a prominent anti-drug advocate and lent his name to a Toronto community center serving LGBTQ and at-risk youth.

The accumulated damage from his ring career led to dementia, which required full-time care in his final years. Chuvalo held multiple Canadian heavyweight titles but never captured a world championship or gained Hall of Fame induction.

His iron chin and reputation as one of the sport's genuinely decent figures remain his dual legacy. No service details have been announced.
