Garry Backs Prates To Defeat Makhachev

Ian Machado Garry believes Carlos Prates can beat Islam Makhachev and become UFC lightweight champion.

Garry, who lost a decision to Makhachev at UFC 327 earlier this year, told Eze Talks Sports that Prates poses a unique threat to the dominant titleholder. The Irishman fought Prates himself in a close bout that ended with the Brazilian nearly finishing him in the final round.

Garry Sees Path To Victory For Prates

"It's a dangerous fight for both men," Garry said, per MMA Junkie. "I think where Carlos is different to me is he's far more aggressive, but equally I don't feel like he's as talented when it comes to stopping the grappling. So it's a very, very interesting fight. Can Carlos land that one punch to knock him out, or can Islam take him down and finish him?"

Garry added his heart tells him Prates can pull off the upset, which would set up a rematch between the two welterweights. Prates has called Makhachev "boring" in recent weeks and positioned himself as the next challenger after a string of highlight-reel finishes.

BJPenn.com reports the Brazilian's aggression and knockout power give him a puncher's chance against a champion who has looked untouchable through his recent title defenses. Makhachev showed against Garry that challengers need near-perfect execution to pry the belt away, but Prates represents a different kind of puzzle with his offensive volume and finishing ability.
