Fury-Usyk Has A Two-Way-Rematch Clause, De La Hoya Defends Ryan Garcia
In some boxing news, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk’s upcoming undisputed fight has a two-way-rematch clause in it.
That is according to Mike Coppinger. The news will be a delight for boxing fans in that they will have the chance to witness the two best heavyweights of this era going toe-to-toe twice.
The initial talks for the fight to be held at Wembley in April failed due to the differences over the rematch clause. Fury reportedly wanted a 50-50 split in the rematch. Meanwhile, Usyk was intent on having a 70-30 split for the winner.
Although that may have been the case, an agreement has now been reached. However, if the rematch does go ahead, then the IBF title would not be on the line since winner would have to make a mandatory defense.
Fury-Usyk Rematch Clause
"The IBF sent a letter to involved parties last week that stipulated the winner of Fury-Usyk must make a mandatory defense with no intervening bouts, and that the organization will not grant exceptions. That means if an immediate rematch takes place, the IBF title won’t be on the line. In that instance, Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic will fight the next available contender for the vacant IBF title," Coppinger said
So in reality, the fighters will have one attempt to fight for undisputed which means the pressure is on them to perform. And since both fighters are undefeated, one will have to come up short.
De La Hoya On Garcia
Meanwhile, Oscar De La Hoya has defended Ryan Garcia following criticism over his opponent Oscar Duarte. Garcia will face the Mexican on December 2nd, 2023, in what will be the first fight under his new trainer, Derrick James.
Duarte will not be a pushover if his current form is anything to go by. The fighter has stopped his last 11 opponents, showing that he does have the firepower to cause damage.
In addition, since Garcia was stopped in his last fight when he faced Gervonta Davis, this is something he will have to be wary of.
But for all of dangers that could come his way, it appears that Garcia has been receiving criticism which has caused De La Hoya to respond.
"People who do not know boxing are just plain stupid. How can you knock on Ryan when he [i]s fighting a KO artist in Oscar Duarte. When you get knocked out you choose an easy fight next, Ryan is taking big risk," De La Hoya said
Garcia’s Future
Ultimately, Garcia could not have faced the best in the division in his first fight. A new trainer will take time to adjust to as well as the 140-pound weight on a full-time basis.
But if he does manage to come out victorious, then mega fights against Teofimo Lopez or Devin Haney could follow. Garcia has the pulling power to make those fights, as he does have a huge following.
However, he must overcome Duarte first. But moving forward, the future does appear bright for Garcia. Find all the latest boxing news and MMA breaking updates on boxingblitz.
