Foster's Path After Navarrete Win

O'Shaquie Foster's dominant win over Emanuel Navarrete likely leads to a mandatory defense against Charly Suarez rather than an immediate move up in weight, according to Bad Left Hook managing editor Scott Christ.

Foster stopped Navarrete in impressive fashion earlier this month, positioning himself as the clear top man at 130 pounds. Despite his stated interest in facing Shakur Stevenson or Devin Haney at higher weights, the immediate road forward appears to run through Suarez. "It's a good fight and even with that terrific win over Navarrete, it may be hard for Foster to find any bigger a fight quickly enough," Christ wrote in response to a reader mailbag question.

Vasiliy Lomachenko's planned comeback at junior lightweight adds another variable. The Ukrainian legend aims to become undisputed champion again after roughly three years away from the ring. Christ gives Lomachenko low odds of accomplishing that goal, noting Foster would have posed problems even for a prime version of Loma. "He was never a true lightweight, though he did very well at the weight anyway," Christ observed. Lomachenko turns 39 in February.

Foster could vacate his belt for a Lomachenko unification bout if the timing works, but the mandatory with Suarez remains the most probable next step. The performance against Navarrete pushed Foster into Christ's top-ten pound-for-pound rankings and made him a leading candidate for Fighter of the Year honors.

Foster holds one of the four major titles at 130 pounds, with Anthony Cacace and Suarez also in the mix at the weight. The division appears headed for a collision course between its top names heading into 2027.
