Foster Went Straight To Ambulance After DWCS Win

Greg Foster earned a UFC contract on Dana White's Contender Series and was wheeled into an ambulance before he could celebrate with the other winners.

Foster beat Jason Asher by unanimous decision in the season finale on what doubled as his mother's birthday, then was rushed to a waiting ambulance outside the Meta APEX. He had fought through three rounds with a broken mother back in Tucson — she had fractured her neck and pelvis in a car accident weeks earlier, spent two weeks in the ICU, and was still in rehab when Foster got the call.

Fighter Tried To Skip Hospital After Contract Win

"I just want to let the fans know I was trying hard to get that energy, baby," Foster told MMA Fighting's José Youngs. "The doctors were getting mad at me in the back. I was trying not to go to the hospital, but they wouldn't do it."

Foster called his mother as soon as the ambulance doors closed. She was pumped, he said. UFC CEO Dana White had wished her well on the broadcast, a gesture Foster said he appreciated. The 34-year-old featherweight plans to drop back to 145 pounds for his official UFC debut after taking the Contender Series bout at lightweight on short notice.

Foster's mother had been in the accident while he was preparing for the fight. He rushed to Tucson, left her bedside to resume camp, then did not see her for nearly three weeks before fight night. Eight broken ribs, a collapsed lung, neck surgery. Doctors were not sure she would survive. Foster said his mother is tough — "pretty hood and she's gangster" — and cleared him to chase the contract.

Foster awaits his first UFC assignment and expects his next walk to be less eventful than his last.
