Diego Lopes eyes lightweight move, open to Yair Rodriguez fight

Diego Lopes is considering a move to lightweight after losing twice to featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, though one potential matchup could keep him at 145 pounds.

The Brazilian told MMA Fighting that Yair Rodriguez represents a bout "that might make sense" given their shared history, but noted that Rodriguez has been inactive for more than a year. "Since I fought in Miami, I've already fought three times, and nobody knows what's happened with him," Lopes said.

If UFC brass allows him to compete in both divisions, Lopes said he would welcome the flexibility. But forced to pick one weight class, he leans toward 155. "Considering where things stand right now, and with Volkanovski still being the champion, I think I'd choose 155," he said.

Rodriguez has not competed since taking a decision over Patricio Freire in early 2025. The Mexican standout holds a 20-5 record with one no-contest.

Lopes most recently defeated Steve Garcia at UFC Freedom 250 in Washington. No date has been announced for his next appearance.
