De La Hoya Meets Arum To Make The Biggest Fights

In some recent boxing news, Oscar De La Hoya met Bob Arum with a view to making a super fight between Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez on February 10th, 2023.

The meeting came after De La Hoya expressed his concern over the future of boxing after reports that Showtime may not be in boxing next year.

And a huge problem within the sport has been the failure of networks and promoters to come together to get the fights made. That has naturally come at the expense of the fan base who have had to suffer as a result.

And at a time when boxing fans are seeing the rise of the UFC, something had to change which is why De La Hoya was very vocal.

De La Hoya On Unity

"If we want boxing to survive, if we want boxing to thrive, we need super-fights, like all the time. Fighters must fight each other. We have to come together. Promoters – Eddie Hearn, Al Haymon, Bob Arum, whoever’s out there, let’s come together, I’m calling you out! Let’s come together, let’s meet……the power of the minds, and come up with something, because boxing can die. I’m calling you all out. Let’s do this," De La Hoya said

And now it appears that he is backing up his words after meeting Arum. A fight with Teofimo Lopez was under discussion, which would generate huge numbers given that both have the desire to make the biggest fights.

Garcia is a cash cow in the sport, having earned $30 million for facing Gervonta Davis. Meanwhile, Lopez made it clear that he was targeting fights that made nine figures.

And given that he has the WBO junior welterweight title, that would be a reason for Garcia to face him. And by the looks of it, the meeting went to plan.

De La Hoya On Arum

"What a great meeting with the Bob [Arum] father. I’m calling on all promoters to unite and make the biggest fights and the best fights possible for boxing fans," De La Hoya

Nevertheless, unless those big fights get made, then it is all speculation at the moment. Garcia does not currently have the best of relationships with De La Hoya as they do have a court battle.

Nevertheless, that could simply be a way for Garcia to ultimately get more out Golden Boy which appears to be working well. After all, if the Lopez fight does not go ahead, De La Hoya is already targeting a bout with Devin Haney.

"I was at the Sphere opening, and I cannot tell you how f***ing amazing it is. So imagine Super Bowl Weekend, the Super Bowl of boxing. Ryan Garcia vs Teofimo Lopez or even the winner of Devin Haney vs Regis Prograis," De La Hoya stated

Ultimately, Garcia has to do what is best for his career. But if De La Hoya is giving King Ryan his backing, then that can only be a good thing moving forward. The only question remaining is that will Garcia be able to deliver? Time will tell.
