De La Hoya On Why Boxing Better Off Without White
Oscar De La Hoya says Dana White has no place in boxing and the sport would be better off without him.
The Golden Boy promoter sat down with DAZN to discuss his promotional goals and used the opportunity to push back against the UFC president's recent foray into the sweet science. De La Hoya suggested White should stay focused on mixed martial arts and let boxing promoters handle their own business.
De La Hoya Rejects White's Boxing Model
De La Hoya told DAZN that White's approach threatens the sport's structure. "You're not going to erase the history of the sport of boxing, you're not going to erase the world titles that fighters want to fight for," he said, per Bad Left Hook. He added that White's UFC compensation model would not fly in boxing, where fighters have historically commanded larger purses.
The Hall of Fame fighter turned promoter expressed optimism about DAZN's current alignment of major promotional outfits, saying it creates opportunities to make the best fights across different stables. He namechecked Floyd Schofield and Josh Edwards as part of a next generation he believes surpasses the current crop of talent.
De La Hoya said his long-term goal is to become the first world champion inducted into the Hall of Fame as a promoter. Golden Boy's next major card featuring Schofield is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
