Danny Garcia's Return Is Announced – Should He Box Again?

Danny Garcia makes his return to the ring on October 18 in the main event, but is this the right move?

Garcia will have his first fight since losing to Erislandy Lara on September 14th, 2024, subject to an opponent being confirmed. Garcia’s recent record does not make for good reading. His last win came in 2022 when he defeated Jose Benavidez Jr. That capped off a record of just one win from his last three, as the other defeat came against Errol Spence Jr. Garcia is the former WBC and WBA champion at 140, while he also has held the WBC belt at 147.

This upcoming fight for Garcia is a high-stakes gamble. The former two-division champion has already secured his place in boxing history. However, with his last win against Jose Benavidez Jr. sparking retirement speculation, a loss to an unannounced opponent would be a disastrous end to an otherwise impressive career.

The physical toll of a long career also makes this comeback attempt particularly dangerous. At 37, Garcia’s body simply doesn’t recover as quickly as it did a decade ago. The cumulative punishment from a career that includes battles against fighters like Amir Khan, Lucas Matthysse, and Errol Spence Jr. adds up. However, following the Lara loss, there were doubts about his career. Garcia and his father, Danny Garcia, made the following comments, which suggested that retirement could be on their mind.

Should He Return?

"I gotta sit back and think about it. You know, I didn’t have a long, long career. You know, I’ve been at the top of the game for 12 years. “For sure. I mean, at the end of the day, he’s always gonna do what’s best for me. I apologize to all my fans. I tried to be great tonight. I overcame things outside the ring so, if you go through mental health issues, just stay strong. I tried to fight through it tonight and It wasn’t just my night. I tried my best. It just wasn’t clicking, I can’t, I have no excuses," Danny Garcia

"It’s always a great honor to be here and see Danny fight. Might be my last, I don’t know. Only God knows that. I think he’s got to decide whatever he wants to do, but whatever he wants to do, I’m okay with it," Angel Garcia

Fans had plenty to say about Garcia’s upcoming return.
