Dana White Clarifies Stakes For O'Malley vs. Zahabi

UFC CEO Dana White addressed the status of the June 14 bout between Sean O’Malley and Aiemann Zahabi, clarifying that the fight has not been designated as an official #1 contender match.

While the bantamweight division is more crowded than ever, White used the UFC Winnipeg post-fight press conference to lower the temperature on “title eliminator” labels, despite the high rankings of both participants.

For O’Malley, the path back to the bantamweight belt has been challenging. O’Malley first lost his title to Merab Dvalishvili in September 2024 at UFC 306 (the landmark Sphere event). He was unsuccessful in his attempt to reclaim the belt in their June 2025 rematch at UFC 316, where he was choked out. Suga finally found his footing again in January 2026 at UFC 324, earning a unanimous decision victory over Song Yadong.

Zahabi is riding a massive seven-fight winning streak. Zahabi’s most recent outing in October 2025 saw him secure a split-decision victory over former title challenger Marlon Vera. Zahabi was confident a win over O’Malley would give him a shot at champion Petr Yan. White, however, pushed back.

“They added that it was a title eliminator. So if I beat Sean O’Malley, I’m gonna be fighting Petr Yan for the title. These guys are put in these positions with great opportunities. Let’s see what the fight looks like. Let’s see how they perform. Just to throw out there, ‘Whoever wins is gonna get it,’ that’s not really what happens here. Perform, let’s see how you look, and then we’ll make that decision,” White said

Is It The Right Move?

Leon Edwards went on an eight-fight win streak before finally being acknowledged as the clear #1 contender. If Zahabi stops O’Malley on the South Lawn, the title shot becomes inevitable. If he wins a “boring” split decision, White can still argue he needs one more “big” win.

Petr Yan (who reclaimed the belt from Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 323 in December 2025) is a champion who values legacy and “rightful” contenders. By not naming a mandatory challenger yet, the UFC maintains maximum leverage over Yan’s next booking. This allows the UFC to wait and see the outcome of other summer bantamweight clashes. If a more “marketable” or “dominant” contender emerges elsewhere, the UFC can make better fights.
