Conor McGregor addresses civil rape case ahead of UFC 329
Conor McGregor has publicly addressed a civil sexual assault case for the first time, declaring himself innocent days before his UFC 329 bout with Max Holloway.
According to MMA Mania, McGregor made the statement during fight week in Las Vegas, breaking months of silence on the matter. The Irish star had previously avoided comment on the civil suit that resulted in a verdict against him last year. "I am an innocent man," McGregor said, per the report.
McGregor's UFC 329 return caps lengthy absence
The former two-division champion returns Saturday night after an extended layoff, attempting to rebuild his reputation both inside and outside the cage. McGregor has also announced plans to campaign exclusively at welterweight moving forward, telling reporters that "170 is a comfortable cut" and ruling out a return to the lightweight division he once dominated.
The timing of McGregor's statement raised eyebrows among observers, who noted the proximity to his comeback fight. MMA Mania writer Andrew Richardson questioned whether McGregor's recent public religious declarations were genuine, suggesting they followed what he called "the classic media playbook when accused of sexual assault."
McGregor opened as a betting underdog against Holloway, whom he defeated by decision in 2013. The Irishman has indicated he wants a quick turnaround after Saturday, potentially setting up a fall bout with Paddy Pimblett if he emerges victorious.
