Charlo And Lara Eyed For Tszyu

Tim Tszyu beat Errol Spence Jr. on July 25 and immediately created a matchmaking problem.

The unanimous decision victory was a significant result on paper — Spence is a former unified welterweight champion and one of the most accomplished fighters of his generation. The problem is that Spence arrived at the fight at 36 years old, coming off a long layoff, and looked every bit of it.

Charlo has not secured a meaningful win since getting outclassed by Canelo Alvarez in late 2023. He is 36, has been largely inactive, and would arrive at any fight with Tszyu carrying the same faded quality that defined Spence's performance last Friday.

A win over Charlo in those conditions does not advance the argument that Tszyu belongs among the elite middleweights. It reinforces the suspicion that his team is selecting targets based on name recognition rather than competitive relevance.

If Tszyu beats Lara convincingly, the response will be that he beat a 43-year-old. If he struggles, the response will be worse. There is no outcome in a Lara fight that builds Tszyu's stock at a division where he is trying to establish himself as a genuine contender.

The contrast that makes both options particularly hard to justify is what is available elsewhere. Carlos Adames is the WBC middleweight champion, 31 years old, coming off significant wins, and represents exactly the kind of prime, title-holding opponent that would tell the boxing public something real about where Tszyu fits in the division's hierarchy.

A win over Adames does what wins over Spence, Charlo, and Lara combined cannot — it places Tszyu at the top of a relevant middleweight conversation against a champion who is actually operating at the level the title implies. The Spence win gave Tszyu momentum and visibility. How he uses that is the question his team now has to answer.
