Canelo Warns Munguia Following Weigh-In – ‘I Don't Play'

Canelo Alvarez and Jamie Munguia’s weigh-in took place as both fighters made the middleweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">Super Middleweight Limit.

They face off on PBC’s second PPV with Amazon Prime Video this Saturday, as Alvarez defends his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title. Munguia is an undefeated fighter with a 43-0 record, looking to upset the apple cart. The all-Mexican clash has been dominated by the friction between Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo in the build-up.

De La Hoya singled out Canelo at the pre-fight presser, telling him to respect his name for how Golden Boy supported his career. Alvarez reacted negatively, accusing De La Hoya of attempting to steal his money. Both mean nearly squared up to each other, only for security to diffuse the situation. De La Hoya responded by issuing a cease and desist letter, claiming defamatory comments. 

De La Hoya On Canelo

"He said this outrageous lie not once, but several times – both in English and Spanish – and it has now been re-published to millions around the world. The legal implications of such blatantly false allegations” are serious. It’s defamatory … to accuse someone of a crime [and] to make false statements specifically designed to injure someone’s business. Canelo did both of those things [Wednesday].

"He falsely accused Oscar of a crime with the specific intention of supposedly warning other boxers not to do business with Oscar or Golden Boy. Clearly, Canelo intentionally defamed Oscar and Golden Boy. We also demand that Canelo immediately retract his defamatory allegations that Oscar stole from boxers. Oscar and Golden Boy reserve all rights to sue Canelo for the damages caused by these defamatory accusations, including punitive damages designed to ensure Canelo learns his lesson," De La Hoya’s attorney Ricardo Cestero said

"Following the termination of his relationship with Golden Boy, Alvarez audited Golden Boy’s payments and deductions under his prior contracts. The audit found that Alvarez was owed money. Court records show that GGG also audited Golden Boy and found that he had also been underpaid. GGG then sued Golden Boy for the missing funds," Gregory M. Smith revealed 

Weigh In

The weigh-in took place with both fighters coming under the 168-pound limit. Canelo weighed 166.8 pounds and Munguia weighed 167.4 pounds. There was a perception that Alvarez was a little drained, but the Mexican will rehydrate, leaving no concerns over his physique. Once the weigh in was done, Alvarez had plenty to say.

The fight has a lot riding on the line for the fighters and De La Hoya. A victory for Canelo silences De La Hoya’s criticism, who has accused Alvarez of being past his prime. He referred to the boxer as an ‘old bear.’ A win also damages De La Hoya’s stable following Ryan Garcia’s failed VADA tests for Ostarine.

Following his biggest win over Devin Haney to become the face of boxing, Garcia faces a race against time to prove his innocence. A victory for Munguia makes him Mexico’s biggest star. Meanwhile, Canelo has been accused of ducking David Benavidez. Munguia’s team has clarified that if they beat Alvarez, they wanted to fight the Mexican Monster next.

Benavidez is likely to be ringside for this fight, so it has increased the pressure on both fighters to perform. So will Canelo defend his title, or can Munguia become the next PPV star? Time will tell come fight night.
