Canelo Open to Crawford Rematch

Canelo Alvarez has been away for a year. He says the basics cost him the last one.

The 36-year-old spoke ahead of his October 31 return against WBC middleweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli, his first fight since losing the undisputed super middleweight title to Terence Crawford. Reflecting on the Crawford loss, Alvarez kept his explanation simple.

"Even if I did everything correctly, the things sometimes don't go your way. I learned that, you know, sometimes we forget the basics and I forgot the basics in that fight,” Canelo

Crawford retired in December and has indicated he is content to stay there. Alvarez is not interested in accepting that as a final answer.

"We always, as a fighter, we always want revenge. I always do good in my rematch. I know what is wrong, what I did wrong. So yeah, if the opportunity is there, it would be amazing,” Crawford

Alvarez's rematch record supports the claim. He has generally performed better the second time he has faced an opponent, and he says the Crawford loss gave him something specific to correct. Whether Crawford ever emerges from retirement to give him the chance is a separate matter.

"I was so excited. To come here to the USA and based on what I hear about all the stories when they come and fight here and everything, that was my dream," Canelo

Now 63-3-2 with 39 knockouts, Alvarez acknowledged there is "not very much" left for him to accomplish. He said he continues fighting out of passion and keeps finding motivation in the records he breaks. On the question of when he will stop, he offered a straightforward answer.

"When I'm there in the gym and I take a lot of punches and then my body doesn't respond in the same way, then I know," Canelo
